Symbolism
In literature, a symbol is an object or a person that is meant to express meaning or represent some greater idea. For example, Harry's scar initial represents in his uniqueness, the ways in which he is different in both the muggle and wizarding worlds. As the story progresses throughout the books, so does the meaning of the symbol. It moves beyond Harry's uniqueness to represent Voldemort's narrow minded focus and unwavering hatred to the love, protection and devotion Harry's mom provides him. When the reader recognizes these symbols and analyzes the importance, they understand the story or text on a deeper level. Studying symbols and settings begins to help us understand as the readers why the author is telling the story and what we are supposed to take away from it.
