Cyberjournal Characterization: Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. This is done with direct interactions between you as the reader and the author. For example, the author might directly tell you that the character is a 5'10" female with blond hair stiffened by salt, crystal blue eye, skin kissed by the sun, and flower-patterned board shorts. This information helps you directly create an image in your mind's eye of the character. However, information can also be revealed about a character through indirect interactions. These interactions happen when you infer things about the character based on their interactions with other characters, their inner thought process, their reaction to conflict, etc. All of these questions focus on characterization. To answer these questions, consider the main character of your story (the protagonist) along with the character they come into conflict with (the antagonist). You are not required to answer all of these questions. These questions are meant for inspiration purposes only. Pick the ones that inspire you to write and think about your novel.

Symbolism
In literature, a symbol is an object or a person that is meant to express meaning or represent some greater idea. For example, Harry's scar initial represents in his uniqueness, the ways in which he is different in both the muggle and wizarding worlds. As the story progresses throughout the books, so does the meaning of the symbol. It moves beyond Harry's uniqueness to represent Voldemort's narrow minded focus and unwavering hatred to the love, protection and devotion Harry's mom provides him. When the reader recognizes these symbols and analyzes the importance, they understand the story or text on a deeper level. Studying symbols and settings begins to help us understand as the readers why the author is telling the story and what we are supposed to take away from it. Parking Lots What is a symbol you have come to recognize in your novel?
Do Now | Rename the novel
