Socratic Seminar Prep Capstone Essay A capstone essay is a representation of the knowledge you gained in Issues and Ethics. It is an opportunity to explore what you have learned using your own creativity. This means there is not one way to construct a capstone essay, because it is about you as an individual. Essay Description (this essay will not be formally graded for structure, grammar, or context, it is merely meant to prepare you for Friday's Socratic Seminar) This past year the majority of us read two major pieces of literature that have raised questions about morals and ethics by considering the worst of humanity; however, despite many of the characters in these literary works diving deep into moral depravity, we are capable as humans of putting ourselves in their shoes. In doing so, we consider how these characters' stories, struggles, failures and redemptions might change our own ideas of morals and ethics. Khaled Hosseini wrote in The Kite Runner, "there is a way to be good again”. Construct an essay in which you consider societal and individual morals and ethics through the literary works There There and The Kite Runner as well as any topics we have studied within the Social Studies discipline. How can the characters and events in these novels teach us to be good again?

Artist Statement An artist statement is a written conversation the artist has with the audience. While your audience will develop thoughts and ideas based on what they see in your work, the artist statement is your opportunity to tell the audience what you want them to see or what you believe to be true about the topic you studied. Your artist statement should include three components: what, how, why (although not necessarily in this order).

Project Overview The story of Afghanistan is in so many ways a very tragic one. Afghanistan is one of the most impoverished nations of the world. It is one of the most war-torn, most ravaged, and most beleaguered of nations. It is a nation that has been beset by invasion, external pressure and internal upheaval since before the time of Alexander the Great. Its people are a people who have endured more than most of us can ever imagine. In fact, for many Afghans, all that has changed in the last one thousand years are the weapons which have been used against so many of them. Project Description At the conclusion of your essay, you will need to translate your analysis into a symbolic portrayal of your learning. This visual must include the following:
