Do Now:
Read “The Remains” by Timothy Liu independently. Underline a word, phrase, and sentence that stand out to you for any reason. Share out. Reading: Read the poem aloud. Decipher meaning – What are we talking about? What is the main issue at hand in this poem? What are some of the images that stand out to you? What do you notice about the format of the poem? What are some of the cultural elements at play in this poem? How do they impact how the people in the poem think or interact with each other? What is the purpose of the italics? Why does Liu mention that he has traveled to get to this place? Why does Liu mention his father’s experience in the war? How can you relate this to the book? What does the author want us to understand? What is the poem telling us about the world? Do Next: Think about what you are completing for Dan’s class. What is a topic you would like to explore more? Identify a topic. We will be writing a poem about it. Take a look at the poem again. What are some of the parts you really like? What are some things you’d like to steal from this poem – phrasing of things, words, concepts or elements, tone? Studio Time: Begin outlining the format of your poem. Consider: What are you writing about? How do you want to write about it – literally? Through a metaphor? From whose perspective? Do you need to do any research? Look back on past assignments? What are some words you’d like to use? What are you trying to help your audience understand? What will your visual representation of China's government evolution look like? Do Now | Quick Jot.
What will be your starting point today?
Do Now: What was your favorite part of the book? Could be a character, a scene, a theme, etc. Share out.
Do Next: Sit with your partner. Ash/Ina, Darian/Wesley, Landon/Veronica/Noah. Mystery Dice: Each group will get a pair of dice. One die has an art form on it. The other has an assortment of themes, characters, places, and objects from the book. In pairs, you will take turns rolling the dice. After you’ve both received your selection, you will spend five minutes creating whatever art form you received about whatever topic you received. Be creative! It could be from the topic’s perspective, it could be how people in Ding Village viewed it, it could be your own personal response, etc. YOU MAY ROLL ONLY ONCE MORE IF YOU DO NOT LIKE YOUR SELECTION. I will set a timer for five minutes. Then you will present your creation to your partner. Then we will do it again, two more times. Reflection: Each person must share one creation. Quick jot + Share Out: What do you feel like you’re coming away with from the book? What new insights have you gained? What questions do you still have? If you could change one thing about the book, what would it be? I know many people did not like the ending. Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not? Course DescriptionGreat World Text is an advanced English and Social Studies course sponsored by the University of Wisconsin’s Center for Humanities. Dream of Ding Village is a work of fiction. While its sociocultural and geopolitical contexts are integral to its impact, it is important to remember that this is a work of literature. While literature can help us teach culture, history, politics and so on, no one text can bear the burden of representing an entire nation, culture, or people. Dream of Ding Village is the story of the 1990s public health crisis in China, when rural villages selling their blood led to an AIDS outbreak.
