**Please meet in Kimberly's room as there will be testing happening in 3307 Professional Model | See, Think, Wonder Argentinian Dirty War During the Argentina Dirty War of the 1970s, 30,000 young people were killed for activism against the government. These people were killed in what the government called a war against subversion, as a way for the government to gain control through the silencing of different opinions. In the book Kiss of the Spider Woman, Manuel Puig examines the complexities of the time through the eyes of two government prisoners and footnotes providing background on the public perception. How can we make up for our past? How does a country recover from a gruesome history? Argentina has not been able to heal from the pain caused by the Dirty War. Their government has struggled to fully admit their fault in the damage the country faced. Families have been left without closure for their missing children. A generation of children grew up not knowing their true identity. Without acknowledgment and apologies from the people responsible, the rest of the country will never be able to fully heal. A cartonera is a handmade book that was made in Argentina during the early 2000s after a financial crash left most of the country in poverty. Literature was only accessible to the rich. These handmade books were a way for the creative expression of artists and writers across all social levels. This cartonera uses a combination of Argentine and American newspaper articles, US Intelligence reports, and poems written from the perspective of the young people lost during the Dirty War. In the true spirit of cartoneras, this art piece makes these stories of the Dirty War accessible to all people. Gathering | Headlines

éPortfolio Submission FormCourse DescriptionThis course investigates stories of Totalitarian and post-apocalyptic societies in order to better understand topics relevant in our current society. We will read one dystopian novel as a group and then each student will select a second dystopian novel to analyze individually. We will break down the five characteristics of dystopian literature and research how those characteristics might already be happening in the world around us—government control, environmental destruction, technological control, survival, and loss of individualism.
