What is Santiago's Untold Story? What is The Alchemist really about? Book Review A strong book review critically evaluates the makings of the novel. As the writer, it is not your job to summarize the book. That is what can be found on the back cover if any of your readers decides to check the book out. Instead you will discuss your opinion of the book, in writing, using information from the book as support.

Artist Statement An artist statement is the written description of your project. The statement describes what was made, how it was made and why it was made in a formal written composition in order for the audience to understand the your point of view about the studied topic. Format: The artist statement should be a typed page in length. It is written using Arial, 11-point font, and single spaced. Since it is single spaced, paragraphs should not be indented, but instead have an extra space between each paragraph (consider my past two paragraphs in this syllabus!). While it is acceptable to use first-person “I” in an artist statement, do so sparingly. Remember the artist statement is about getting your audience to consider their own understanding of your work. This might be hard to do if you keep telling them through your writing what you think. Questions:

Project Overview | Hero's Journey Map Construct a visual map of Santiago’s journey in The Alchemist. This map should articulate - in images and words - Santiago’s experiences within the stages of the Hero’s Journey, interactions with the three world religions, and realization of his personal journey. This map may be metaphorical or literal; however, it must include symbols + images (reading standards), direct quotes + analysis (writing standards) that combine to suggest some greater world meaning (thinking standards). While the symbols and images are important, it will be impossible to pass this project without the direct quotes and analysis since these specifically represent the writing standards needed to obtain English credit in this course. Components 12 Stages of the Hero’s Journey: Identify the 12 stages of Santiago’s journey by examining important points in the plot. Your map should include references to the plot as well as a detailed explanation of how Santiago changes as a character within each stage - confidence, capability, faith in his journey (personal legend).
3 Major Religions: Identify elements of the three major world religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Explain interactions Santiago has with each religion in the novel.
1 Personal Legend + Motif: Detail Santiago’s personal legend and how his journey lead him to the satisfaction of this legend including the motif that you have been tracking throughout reading the novel. Synthesis what you believe readers should learn from Santiago and his journey.

Do Next | Reader's Response Discussion “You must understand that love never keeps a man from pursuing his Personal Legend. If he abandons that pursuit, it’s because it wasn’t true love…the love that speaks the Language of the World” (122).

Today and tomorrow you will be creating a cyberjournal that encompasses all of the thinking you have completed so far in your Traveler's Journal. What can I include in my cyberjournal?
What is Addie looking for?!
How long should be cyberjournal be? COME ON NOW! WHAT KIND OF QUESTION IS THAT?! As always, Addie will be looking for quality not quantity. For many of you, this cyberjournal will be a different experience than those I have had you write in the past because it is more focused on your personal response and interactions with the book rather than an analysis paragraph. BUT that means it is much more tricky. When you start voicing your opinions and thoughts of the world, Addie wants details! You know she is a little devilish character on your shoulder saying But WHY? What do you mean? I don't understand what you mean? I need an example? What makes you say that? Give me evidence! Ok, still want a specific length? Fiiiinnnnneeeeee. Two paragraphs minimum. Professional Publication
