Do Now | Silent Reading, seek to finish the novel
Project Overview | Hero's Journey Map Construct a visual map of Santiago’s journey in The Alchemist. This map should articulate - in images and words - Santiago’s experiences within the stages of the Hero’s Journey, interactions with the three world religions, and realization of his personal journey. This map may be metaphorical or literal; however, it must include symbols + images (reading standards), direct quotes + analysis (writing standards) that combine to suggest some greater world meaning (thinking standards). While the symbols and images are important, it will be impossible to pass this project without the direct quotes and analysis since these specifically represent the writing standards needed to obtain English credit in this course. Components 12 Stages of the Hero’s Journey: Identify the 12 stages of Santiago’s journey by examining important points in the plot. Your map should include references to the plot as well as a detailed explanation of how Santiago changes as a character within each stage - confidence, capability, faith in his journey (personal legend).
3 Major Religions: Identify elements of the three major world religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Explain interactions Santiago has with each religion in the novel.
1 Personal Legend + Motif: Detail Santiago’s personal legend and how his journey lead him to the satisfaction of this legend including the motif that you have been tracking throughout reading the novel. Synthesis what you believe readers should learn from Santiago and his journey.
