Do Now:
Find your design from last week. During the next 2 minutes, identify one of the following to share:
Each person will share their response to the do now. We want to do this quick, so state your thought and then we will keep moving around the room. Today’s Objective: By the end of class today, each student will create a bill of materials for their soundproofing design, meet their partner for the project, and decide on a design that they want to build over the course of this week. Bill of Materials A bill of materials is a structured list that contains all of the materials, components, parts, etc. needed to create/manufacture a product. This includes obvious things, like cardboard or egg cartons, but also smaller details, like hot glue, or a utility knife. Your bill of materials should contain all of the elements you will need to create your design as it stands right now. I have uploaded a template for you to use on the Google Classroom. You will have the next 10 minutes to review your design and enter in the materials, quantities, and tools you would need to construct your design. If you have questions, please raise a hand so we can assist you. Mix & Mingle We will spend the next 5 minutes doing a mix and mingle. Please stand up and start moving around the room. If there is an empty space, fill it. Keep moving around until you are told to “Mingle” and then find a person near to you. You will each have 30 seconds to share the following:
Debrief What were some of the things you heard during the mix & mingle? This could be unique ways to use materials, unique materials themselves, interesting ideas for a design, etc. Grouping In a few minutes, we will be assigning random partners to you. Each partner group will be responsible for completing at least (1) prototype design. This design might be a combination of each of your individual designs, you might choose one person’s design to run with, or you might come up with something entirely new. Take the next 5 minutes to develop an Elevator Pitch for your design. This should be a speech that is no more than a minute long, that features the important elements of your design, and identifies why someone should trust why this design will work. You might find it useful to write this speech down. Create Groups We will use the spin wheel that Chris has to assign your partners, then assign you a place in the room to work. Collaborate Once you have made it to the table where you and your partner will be working, pull out your Elevator pitch. We will assign a group member to go first, and then each person will have a minute for their speech, followed by a minute for clarifying questions from their partner. Then, we will switch roles. Now that you have a better understanding of your partner’s thinking and ideas, it is time to decide on a finalized design that you want to prototype this week. Once you have decided on that design, create a drawing of it that labels all of the parts and their purposes, as well as any important measurements. If you finish all of this, create a new bill of materials for your revised design. Ticket Out As you leave, please identify what your next steps are. What is the first thing you need to do during class tomorrow?
