What is one critique or evaluation you made about Death of Salesman yesterday during Writing Workshop? Critical Review Essay A critical review essay considers a work through a critical lens using summarization, analysis, and evaluation skills. A critical review is as simple as considering a piece of work, formulating an opinion about the work, and then providing a detailed explanation of how you came to that opinion. For this particular critical review, you will do so while also comparing Death of a Salesman as the written play with the movie that we watched. Analysis Summary | Provide your audience with all relevant background information. This should include the title of the work, the writer/director/producer, important actors. Give a brief summary of the storyline within the film/play.
Characterization: Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. This is done with direct interactions between you as the reader and the author. For example, the author might directly tell you that the character is a 5'10" female with blond hair stiffened by salt, crystal blue eye, skin kissed by the sun, and flower-patterned board shorts. This information helps you directly create an image in your mind's eye of the character. However, information can also be revealed about a character through indirect interactions. These interactions happen when you infer things about the character based on their interactions with other characters, their inner thought process, their reaction to conflict, etc. Perceive, Know, Care About
Conflict | Conflict in literature is a struggle between opposing forces. Conflict can take place physically (like a battle or an obstacle a character must get past), emotionally (relationships between characters or with themselves), or mentally (a character’s ability to overcome their own fears or outsmart another character). Circle of Viewpoints: Consider the conflict from the perspective of the character.
Theme | Theme considers the social and cultural implications of the story. It is an opportunity for you as the reader to develop a main idea or a message you think is relevant to the story. These ideas are generally associated with human nature and development, societal issues, or worldly views. It is why you think the story is important to read.
Evaluation | This is the time to reflect on your personal response to both the film and the written play.
