Do Now: Pick up your lab and read the feedback about your question. Discuss this with your lab table and see if you understand how to write a proficient investigation question based on the feedback.
Learning Goals: We are learning about all of the aspects of designing and carrying out a lab investigation about sound. 1. Review the expectations for the Background information. Show a model of a level 3 or greater. 2. Discuss how an experimental question should be written. (The question should contain the specific independent variable and the dependent variable and what you are testing about them. ) 3. Talk about Habit of Learning - feedback, revision, thinking 4. Every team must have their experimental plan and procedure written up with enough detail anyone would have a good idea what you are doing and why BEFORE you can start your experiment. Begin running experiments. Please do not throw away materials when finished. We reuse anything that is not destroyed. Please don't destroy materials. SAFETY - Please be mindful of the cups and how you are using them next to your mouth. Do not share the same cup. Wash cups with soap and water before putting back on the table. Exit ticket: Quick scientist meeting to see what has been discovered and what questions we might have.

- Plan and Carry out a fair test investigation - Write a scientific explanation - Use scientific principles (rules of what we know) and evidence to explain your results - Analyze and interpret data (organize data into a table, graph and be bale to describe the pattern in the data and how it helps us answer our question. - Use mathematical thinking - Generate and use a model to help explain something. (Using the model of the molecules of matter to explain your results). Do Now: Pick up a lab report form and move to a table with your group. 1. Introduce materials and the Lab Report Form 2. Set groups to writing up their background section and hypothesis before starting to figure out how they will test their hypothesis. Everyone gets a paper copy of this document to write out their lab report. If you would prefer to write up your final report on a Google Doc, you may do that and turn it in here. You will have to make a copy. Ticket out - Sticky note on your lab: What does your group need to do next on Monday? Learning Goal: Use our model of matter and the scientific principle of sound waves to predict and investigate the propagation of sound waves through different materials.
Do Now: Grab your science notebooks and circle up. Check that you have your speed calculation mini-lab written up in your notebook. (Title, What you did, your data table filled with your speed data). Be ready to share your speed demonstration and calculation. Lesson: Start a new page in your science notebook. KEY QUESTION: Draw a model of the molecules of a solid, liquid and a gas that shows the relative spacing and movement or energy of the molecules. We will discuss this and make sure everyone understands this concept. We will use the States of Matter Phet simulation to review this concept before we move on. Why? Because sound needs matter to travel as a wave. We are exploring how this works. We have already explored the Waves Intro PhET - Sound to see how sound waves interact with the particles of matter. PROJECT PROBLEM: Sound is going through the doors between classroom which makes it hard to concentrate sometimes. To solve this problem, it will help to better understand how sound waves interact with different materials. In your group, draw in your notebooks: A model of why you think sound keeps going when it "hits" a substance (solid, liquid or gas). Share out models, maybe on whiteboards. We are going to do some investigations on sound traveling through materials by making string phones. I have several different types of material you can use for the string and the cups. Please find a partner (groups of three okay) to work with and we will work through writing up our background information and purpose for our investigation together on the paper lab sheet. Ticket out: one person from your group tell a teacher, which materials do you think you might use and why? Do Now: Please get out your computer and complete the Feb 2 Speed Quiz Understanding Check. If you already took it, please do so again. I added more questions.
GET OUT YOUR NOTEBOOK: ALL DATA TODAY WILL BE RECORDED IN YOUR NOTEBOOK! 1. Take the quiz and check your answers. 2. With a partner, use each other or a Hot Wheels car and set up a quick scenario where you can measure the speed of a person walking or your car going from one point to another. The average speed of something is the total distance traveled divided by the time it took to travel that distance. Speed = distance/time Collect distance and time data for multiple scenarios if you have time and calculate the average speeds. |
