PUNKS is an exploration of the queer dance style waacking (also spelled whacking). Waacking is a street dance style created by Black and Latino gay men in 1970s L.A. as a way to create a safe space for self expression. It is often confused with voguing, but is in fact a completely different style with a unique history. The film explores the complex history and modern day relationships with waacking. The title PUNKS is derived from the dance’s original name “punking”, which is a reclamation of the homophobic slur “punk”. Perform
