What is interesting about this introduction? "Perfection: the highest degree of proficiency, skill, or excellence, as in some art. This has been my marker for success since before I could even spell the word. I remember clearly how proud and smart all of my family thought I was, learning how to spell words like together and impossible at the age of three and all. Or how excited my mom was when her kid was removed from kindergarten and placed in first grade after a week and a half. From there I learned if you want attention or to go anywhere you have to be the best and not only that but you have to show everyone else that you are the best. This trait of mine didn’t meld well with other kids when I started primary school; I was the kid who would complete all of the class work for the day in 45 mins then walk in front of the class to tell the teacher that I did so. The only 4th grader to display a narcissistic personality that's who I was until I started to want to actually make real friends and not the kind that you only see when there was a homework assignment." Objectives
Definition and Purpose (the statement) A personal statement is a brief text that describes who you are as an individual. Generally, there are two purposes behind a personal statement. The first is to express who you are as an individual and how you view the world around you. The second is to explain how you understand this to be true. For example, I might feel compelled to use my experiences with competitive swimming in my personal statement. In order for me to use swimming successfully, I would need to explain to my audience why swimming has offered me valuable life lessons; explain what swimming has taught me about myself; explain how swimming has helped me understand the world and how I can be an active participant in it. Although your personal statement is an extension of your resume, it should not repeat things from the resume. That is redundant and boring for your audience. Instead, it should reveal a deeper side of you that may not be recognizable from the skills addressed in the resume. If we go back to my swimming example, this would mean that I would want to explain specific experiences or moments with swimming. I would not want to list all the teams I have swam with or coached for. Read the article: Some of the More Mundane Moments in Life Make Great Essays Pod Discussions
