Do Now: How long do you need to finish your thesis statement?
Studio Time: Finish your thesis and get it approved by me. Claim + Evidence Game: Your team must pick the best pieces of evidence for the claims that you are given. The team who matches all of the claims and evidence first wins. Candy will be delivered on Monday. Review: What claims and evidence pairs did you make? Why did you put them together? Why is it important to have evidence when writing a paper? Quick-ish Jot: What are three pieces of evidence you could use in your paper that support your thesis? Think of scenes, characters, concepts, and recurring images. Take a look at your reading journal to help you. Body Paragraph Workshop: We will begin creating our first body paragraph today. A good format to follow is Claim, Evidence, Explanation. Claim: What am I arguing with this paragraph? Evidence: What is a direct quote from the text that supports my claim? Explanation: What does this quote mean in my own words? How does it relate to/support my claim? Take a look at the examples in your table groups and underline the claim, evidence, and explanation. Then, discuss: What was the author trying to argue? Was the evidence compelling, did it relate to their claim? Did their explanation of the evidence increase your understanding? Studio Time: Work on your first body paragraph. Think about what pieces of evidence you will use and how you will use them throughout your paper. Exit Ticket: How are you feeling about your first body paragraph? Fist to five.

Course DescriptionGreat World Text is an advanced English and Social Studies course sponsored by the University of Wisconsin’s Center for Humanities. Dream of Ding Village is a work of fiction. While its sociocultural and geopolitical contexts are integral to its impact, it is important to remember that this is a work of literature. While literature can help us teach culture, history, politics and so on, no one text can bear the burden of representing an entire nation, culture, or people. Dream of Ding Village is the story of the 1990s public health crisis in China, when rural villages selling their blood led to an AIDS outbreak.
